Superhero For A Day (Short story by Sadhika Menon)

Karan has been praying diligently, twice a day for the past year. He had also vowed to not eat chocolates till his wish was granted which was the ultimate sacrifice and he only cheated a few times. Evidently, he was very eager for his wish to be granted.
But what was it? Karan was tight lipped about it and had not told anyone as he did not want to jinx it.

One night, he was very tired and fell asleep while praying. In his dreams, he was in space, possibly in another planet. It was beautiful with large trees of vibrant colours with luminescent leaves, the colour of the soil was a deep indigo and there was an ethereal blue tinge to the environment. Everything sparkled. He couldn't see anyone else around. Suddenly from the lush yellow bushes, he saw a figure shaped like a human but with some sort of animal face. He couldn't decipher which animal. The figure approached him and said,'You have been waiting a while for this I know. I am your creator and pleased with your devotion.  I wish to grant your wish but only for one day as we cannot have anything disturbing the true reality of being human and powerless.' Karan felt the air leaving his lungs and he struggled for breath and then suddenly opened his eyes. It was just a dream.

The next day, Karan woke up. He finished his morning prayers and joins his family for breakfast. From the kitchen window, he saw the neighbors' cat was stuck in the tree. He instinctively excused himself from breakfast, climbs the tree in seconds like he was almost flying and saves the scared cat. He feels exhilarated but no one had seen him. He knew there was something different about him. He jumped and he saw that he continued to stay in air for a few extended seconds. He did it again and again and each time he went higher and stayed in the air longer. He couldn't believe it but he could fly. He took off from the tree and started zooming up and about. He couldn't wait for all his friends to see this. He went flying around his block and noticed that people couldn't see him. It was as if he was invisible. He went flying in front of a building with reflective glass and there was no reflection. He dint get it.

He decided to keep flying. He noticed a pick-pocket taking an old woman's purse, he tripped the pickpocket and gave the old lady her bag. She fainted as if she had seen a ghost because her bag flew to her mid-air. Karan felt sad. He saved a cat and an old lady and both couldn't see him. He decided to check on the streets a little more. He was a diligent vigilante for the day.

He went home and exhausted fell asleep. He was smiling because even though the one animal and person he saved couldn't see him, he was just happy to help. And he will never forget the feeling of flying. He knew he wouldn't have the powers tomorrow but he was content being a superhero for just one day.
