| Pop Chapter Four |
It was 8.15 PM. People had already started pouring in. The music was blaring from all corners. The bar was flooded and alcohol was pouring like no one’s business. The whiff of weed and hash was in the air. The party was off to a good start.
Meher was hopping around from one group to another trying to be a good hostess before she was too intoxicated to care. She was also looking for Ira. She wanted her to be next to her at all times. She finally found Ira with a bunch of their classmates.
“I still want to give the entrance. For the fuck of it. See where I stand,” said what’s – her – face in a bright yellow dress.
“At least you know what you want to do. I am still figuring my shit out,” said a lanky boy while passing a joint to Ira.
Ira merely stood there. There was nothing much she wanted to say on the subject of future. She was done with academia is what she knew. Her eyes were fixated at Sameer who was talking to a pretty girl in red. He is what I am sure off, she thought.
“Hello guys. I am going to steal E away for a bit. Please enjoy yourselves,” said Meher pulling Ira away.
“If you wanted to spend the night with the geeks, you should have told me. And why do you not have a glass in your hand?” said Meher.
“ I popped acid with Sameer. We were planning on doing this for a very long time. It should kick in anytime now,” said Ira. She had to blurt everything out to Meher.
“What? You are seriously screwed up Ira. But I don’t care as long as you do not remember anything from tonight,” said Meher.
Meher found another bunch of people to entertain. Ira wandered off in the crowd. The music suddenly amplified in her ears and she could hear every note and beat clearly. The bright lights flashed in her eyes and every person looked distinct enough. She also got this surge of energy and headed to the sound console to dance. The wonders of LSD had kicked in.
It was 10 PM. The music was pulsating through every vein in her body. She could not stop dancing. She had not felt this good ever. Everything else seemed to have disappeared. It was just her and the music. She felt a hand on her shoulder and turned back extremely startled. It was only Sameer.
“Hold it their Tiger. You will dance your body weight out,” said Sameer. He held her by the waist and kissed her.
“This feels amazing. I want to climb a tree, jump buildings, and go crazy. I feel so alive,” said Ira.
“You are too cute E. I love you,” said Sameer.
They kissed again and decided to get out of the dance floor and check on Meher.
“Shots, shots, shots,” chanted the people with Meher on top of a table. She was pretty wasted. Mission accomplished.
“I think she will be just fine. Do you want to go near the beach?” asked Ira.
“I want to dance now. You go, I will see you there in a bit,” said Sameer.
“Okay. But don’t keep me waiting, “said Ira.
She made her way through the crowd. Everyone’s faces had a reddish glow and they looked like the devil’s children. She was stopped on the way by a few people. She mechanically exchanged pleasantries and walked on. She could feel the power of the acid growing stronger in her body. She wanted to get away from the crowd and go to the beach.
She walked for about 10 minutes and the sound of the music was gradually being replaced by the music of the waves. She felt calm. She stood on the beach and closed her eyes. The sound of the waves felt beautiful to her ears. She opened her eyes to look at the sea. The moonlight shining on top of the water looked like sheets of crystal glistening and making their way in and out of the shore. It was a breath taking sight.
She went closer to the waves; she wanted to feel the water on her feet. She took off her heels and went near the water. It was freezing cold but she loved the sensation. She kept staring at the patterns made on the sand when the water receded. She found a starfish on the sand. It had been washed to the shore. She picked it up carefully and put it back in the water. Every little thing interested her and seemed magical.
She stood at the same spot for a very long time, blankly staring at the sea. She had lost track of time. She looked up and the moon seemed just a few meters away from her. The stars were moving briskly in the open sky. She rubbed her eyes but this did not seem like a hallucination. She knew it was but it felt real. The open sky canvas was constantly being painted right in front of her eyes. She kept her gaze fixed at the moon. The dark spots on the moon conjured up into a funny smiley face.
She started laughing hysterically. She could not stop. The moon was making funny faces at her. How often did that happen, she thought to herself.
She plonked herself on the not-so-pristine white sands of the beach. She did not care whether it was dirty; she wanted to enjoy her candid moments with nature.
She sat their staring blankly into open space. Letting the water make gentle music and enrich her silent conversations with the funny moon.
“So, this is what you been up to, you moron”.
Ira’s heart stopped. She knew that voice. It would be a nightmare if that person was behind her.
“Maama, is that you?” said Ira.
