| Pop - Chapter Six (Short Story By Sadhika Menon) |
The next morning the entire Kapoor household was woken up with the frantic shrieks of the maid. Maama and Grumpinkins ran to where the screams were coming from - Ira’s room. Maama instantly felt sick in the gut. They entered the room. The curtains were shut. The maid was on the floor screaming. The neon lights were on. The walls had been tarnished by UV paint smeared all over it. The main wall had a sunflower shaped monster. On its hands were pinned the photos of Maama and Grumpinkins. Beneath its foot, one of Sameer’s old photos had been pinned. DIE, DIE, DIE was flashing across the walls of the room. The beautiful lavender walls were restored as soon as the neon lights were shut.
Maama looked for Ira. She finally saw why the maid was screaming. Ira was lying naked on the floor, unconscious. She screeched leapt towards her daughter. She checked for a pulse.
“Call the doctors. Ira needs help. She needs us,” said Maama to Grumpinkins.
Grumpinkins had frozen to one spot seeing the condition of his baby. He could not move.
“What the hell are you staring at me for. Time is running out. Call for a goddamn ambulance now,” said Maama, holding her daughter in her arms.
Grumpinkins did what he was told to do. He turned around to take a last look at Ira and tears were rolling down his cheek.
Within a few minutes, an ambulance arrived. Maama told Grumpinkins to go in the ambulance and that she would come in the car. She seemed composed.
After the ambulance left, she took her phone.
“You get your pathetic self to my house right now. There is something I want to show you. And Sameer, you better hurry up.”
