Pop - Chapter One

It was a school day the next day. The thought of waking up at 7 am and following the same donkey routine for the next five days was tiring enough. Ira Kapoor dreaded these days like all the other 18 – year olds. She longed for the weekend where she could forget about her sad existence which revolved around those five days.
She had a bunch of school work pending. She decided to get down to it after lunch.
“Ira, will you be having dinner with us tonight?” asked her mother or ‘Maama’ as Ira referred to her as.
“Malini, I don’t know why you still bother asking her that. She obviously has plans for the night,” said her father or “Grumpinkins” as she liked to call him.
Ira came downstairs and sat for lunch. Ignoring her parent’s comments, she started eating. She ate measured amounts. She did not like what she saw in the mirror earlier that morning. In the morning she felt like her hips had stretched massively from either side.  She was being careless again. She found her calorie diary and decided to start keeping a tab again.
“Ira, I asked you something. Will you bother answering me?” said Maama.
“It happens to be my best friend’s birthday. I informed you about this a week back. So I think I will not be home tonight,” said Ira.
Maama got up; she had not finished her lunch. Ira continued eating ignoring her mother abruptly walking off. Grumpinkins smirked and went on with eating his food.
Ira walked up to her room after lunch. She checked her timetable and her backlog. She decided to start with her modern history assignment.
The moment she sat down to work her thoughts wandered to several different things. She was excited about the night. She would finally get some alone time with Sameer. It had been days since she had spent some quality time with him. She missed him.
It was Meher’s 19th birthday. She had to leave early to help her with the last minute arrangements of the party.
“I hope she likes the dress I got her. But what should I wear?” she thought to herself.
She promptly got up and opened her closet. Everything was neatly placed. She took out her velvet blue corset and her black mini. She wore it, and took a close look in the mirror. The corset fit her slender body like a dream and the skirt just accentuated her long legs. The rich colour of the corset on her fair skin was absolutely stunning. Her soft black curls fell beautifully on her bare shoulders. She looked gorgeous.
“Why the hell do I keep gaining weight? I look horrendous. I can’t wear this, “she said.
She tried at least five dresses and then she narrowed down to her plain back dress. That was the only one which did not make her look like an ape, she thought.
An hour had passed and she had managed to make no progress on her assignment work. She switched her lamp on and off repeatedly. She loved that lamp. It was skull shaped, who wouldn’t love it, she thought.
Her mind was blank. She went up to her closet again. This time she opened the drawer. All her lingerie was kept there. She blankly stared at the open drawer for a while. She rushed back to shut her room. She took out a little pink box from underneath all her lingerie. She took out a  piece from her stash and decided to roll a joint.
“Maybe this will open my mind. If not a little pre gaming never hurt anyone,” said Ira to her skull lamp.
She rolled the joint with ease. She drew the curtains and opened her window. She knew Maama and Grumpinkins knew exactly what she was up to. But what do they care, she thought. On that thought, she boomed the joint.
‘Remember when you were young, shine like the sun,’ these words were softly filling the silence in her room from the IPod dock. She lay on her bed and stared at the sunflower painting which had been there forever. Staring at the sunflowers never got old. Every time she spotted something new. Today she was staring at the little honeybee on the side of the flower. She loved discovering that painting over and over again.
Two hours breezed by since she decided to do her schoolwork. She looked at the clock and it was 4 pm.
“Fuck, I need to leave for Meher’s now,” she said.
She sprayed the room with air freshener, shut her books and dashed out of her room. She checked whether she had grabbed her change for the party. She had. That very moment her cell phone rang.
“Tonight will be amazing, I can’t wait to see you,” said Ira on the phone.
